Join us for a very special opera talk and performance as Author Davis Miller joins ALO Artistic Director David Craig Starkey in discussing Miller’s latest novel: Approaching Ali.
The novel retells Miller’s experience and friendship with the late Muhammad Ali, and is often lauded as one of history’s most intimately recorded pieces of sports journalism. Recently, it has been adopted to the stage in a new American opera: Approaching Ali
The performance features musical excerpts from the opera performed by North Carolina’s own professional vocalists Carl Dupont and Ted Federle. It's a fresh look at one of history's most controversial athletes, presented in a medium that challenges tradition and encourages the creation of new perspectives.
Discussion will include Miller’s motivation in moving the work from page to stage, Starkey’s production of this new American opera, and the inspiration and redefinition of what it means to have the heart of a champion.
Visit ALO at this talk. Hear amazingly new artistic interpretations of The Greatest's life story, and learn about relationships that grow when a mind is left open.
“Each of Mr. Miller's Muhammad Ali tales is lyrical, important, and rigorously humanizing. There is music and truth in each sentence he writes. I can think of no higher praise for a writer or his work.” -- Maya Angelou
